What if Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was what saves US movie theaters
A blue hedgehog with spiky hair and a need for speed may have just saved Hollywood. sonic the hedgehog 2 outpaced the competition to hit number one at the box office, earning $71 million over the weekend, indicating audiences are feeling better about returning to theaters.
Variety reports that box office sales for sonic the hedgehog 2 set a new record for video game adaptations, breaking the opening weekend record set by none other than the 2020s sonic the hedgehog. Released over President’s Day weekend, weeks before COVID-19 shut down Hollywood, sonic the hedgehog earned $58 million in its first three days of release and ended the long weekend with an impressive $70 million. After a two-year struggle to attract spectators to theaters, the Sonic The sequel suggests that audiences, especially families, are warming up to the idea of returning to the big screen.
It wasn’t all good news at the box office this weekend. The Michael Bay Thriller Ambulance, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, earned $8.7 million domestically over the weekend and trailed Jared Leto’s vampire flick Morbius, which grossed $10.2 million, and Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatumthe romantic action-adventure film The lost citywhich grossed $9.1 million.
At the international level, the Sonic sequel pulled in $37 million from 53 territories, bringing its international earnings to $70 million and the worldwide total to $141 million. Compared to its $90 million budget, sonic the hedgehog 2 is already a runaway success for his studio, Paramount Pictures. Sonic is the studio’s fourth film this year to open in first place, after The Lost City, Scream, and Asshole forever. This success bodes well for cinema and for Paramount, which has had to take a step back from theatrical releases during the pandemic and sell titles like The Chicago 7 Trial and Coming 2 America to streaming platforms. The CEO of the studio Jim Gianopulos was ousted from Paramount last fall, just before all those titles he oversaw hit the top of the box office.
Sonic 2 star Ben Schwartz as the voice of the blue hedgehog and comic book legend jim carrey as the mad scientist, Dr. Robotnik. While promoting Sonic 2, Carrey revealed he was “pretty serious” about retiring from acting, saying “I’ve done enough”. After the success of Sonic sequel, we imagine the bigwigs at Paramount are hoping Carrey was a Liar Liar.
