The public health alert was triggered after an inspection of the Felix facility in July found some of the company’s products to be contaminated with Listeria bacteria.

A total of 19 of the 104 samples collected tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes, with five of these samples from surfaces in the facility. Four other samples from the facility tested positive for other strains of Listeria.

While many people develop relatively mild symptoms after consuming products contaminated with Listeria, others are not so lucky.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), listeriosis, the infection caused by Listeria-can cause fever and diarrhea in otherwise healthy people, but older people and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to perform worse. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages, stillbirths and premature births in pregnant people and life-threatening infections in newborns. About 16 percent of people diagnosis of listeriosis will die of the disease, according to the CDC.

If you have purchased products from Felix, the FDA recommends that you throw them away.

Before disinfecting surfaces, the FDA recommends washing your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
