All McColl’s stores under threat as business nears collapse

With convenience store company McColl’s Retail Group reportedly on the verge of collapse, we’ve taken a look at which stores near you might be at risk.

The chain, which has a partnership with supermarket giant Morrisons, could bring in administrators as early as Friday, according to Sky News. Reports indicate McColl’s impending collapse could see both Morrison’s and petrol retail giant EG Group spark new interest in a partial takeover.

Thursday, May 5, sources say that while the situation regarding McColl remains “fluid”, a meltdown of one form or another was more likely than not. However, a retail industry source pointed out that it was possible a bailout deal could be struck as talks are ongoing over McColl’s future.

Sky News reports that this could mean “the appointment of directors has been delayed beyond the end of this week”. In February this year, there were concerns about McColl’s future as they tried to secure new funding.

The convenience chain employs around 16,000 people, including around 6,000 in full-time equivalent. Eight months ago he successfully raised £30m from shareholders on a cash call.

Across Britain it trades from around 1,100 convenience stores and newsagents, of which around 200 now trade in the Morrisons Daily format. They warned earlier this week that the shares would be suspended by the end of May due to failure to meet a statutory deadline for filing its annual results.
