$1.43M renovation bringing major upgrades and new owners to Defiance Cinema

DEFIANCE, Ohio (WTVG) — A major overhaul and upgrade is underway at Cinema 9, including replacing screens, revamping the audio system and installing heated and reclining seats. It’s all courtesy of the new Phoenix Theaters owners.

“Yeah, everyone’s favorite piece of equipment is heated reclining loveseats,” said Jordan Hohman, project development manager for Phoenix Theaters. “Every seat in every auditorium is going to be converted into these seats.”

The team at Phoenix Theaters is bringing some TLC to movies from the Northtowne Mall to Defiance. The theatre, which shut down in June, is set to be reborn as the Phoenix Theatre. This will be the Michigan-based company‘s 7th location and its first in Ohio.

“We had a reception today which I have to comment on from the town we entered and it was almost a reception committee for us. And I had not received this in any other community in the same way. I want say, it was just overwhelming,” said Cory Jacobson, owner of Phoenix Theaters.

Jacobson has decades in the theater business and a proven track record as a main attraction at malls, like the one at the Monroe Mall. In addition to heated and reclining loveseats, the Phoenix Theater in Defiance will have a state-of-the-art sound system called Dolby ATMOS.

“In this particular circumstance, we have nice, wide auditoriums and I think we could really give these guys here at Defiance and in the community something that they’ve never had before, which is a sound system that will just blow your mind. It’s like something you had to travel, like Disney World to hear,” Jacobson explained.

“For me, I think a movie theater is an essential part of community, and I think it’s like a library or a restaurant that everyone loves, and if you lose that, I think a part of that community goes with it, and I’m just glad that, you know, we can take this opportunity to bring movies back to Defiance,” Hohman added.

The target date for the grand reopening of all nine auditoriums and an all-new, expanded lobby and concession stand is February 2023. You can track progress by clicking here.
